    Immunobiology of hematopoietic stem cell transplants

    Bone marrow transplantation is considered the gold standard when it comes to treating a large number of disorders and cancers related to the human immune system. In spite of a sharp rise in overall recipient survival rates over the last few years, mortality and morbidity rates for those being treated remain unacceptably high.

    Graft versus host disease (GVHD) is the primary cause of post-transplant morbidity and mortality after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) or lymphocyte transfusion. Silvia Selleri’s postdoctoral work focuses mainly on HSCT immunobiology as well as the physiology and possible immunomodulation of GVHD. She also intends to examine the dynamics of post-HSCT immune reconstitution and the feasibility of an immunotherapy approach in treating autoimmune diseases and cancers.
