New tools to study network dynamics in models of neurological disease

My scientific mission is to discover how local and long range cortical circuits work together to drive cognition, and to understand how these processes are degraded in models of autism and epilepsy. My laboratory uses in-vivo two photon calcium imaging in awake-behaving mice performing operant, context-dependent, and working memory-based decision making tasks to understand how different cell types in large networks drive shifts in behavioral strategies.  We also use single and paired juxtacellular, whole-cell recordings, and silicon probe recordings in-vivo to discover how the functional connectivity of circuits in altered in rodent disease models.  We also use optogenetic techniques to manipulate specific cell populations, using this technique to dissect how distinct subpopulations of cells interact during normal and pathological behavior.  We have also developed a new generation of open-source miniaturized microscopes that allow calcium imaging in freely moving animals at extremely low cost and are working to incorporate wireless, multichannel, and optogenetic capabilities into these microscopes.
