Scientific Conference - Anna MacKinnon

Off to a Good Start: Promoting Parental Functioning & Children’s Positive Development

Thursday 17 June 2021 from 12:00 at 13:00

Speaker

  • Anna MacKinnon, PhD
    • Postdoctoral Scholar, Department of Psychology, University of Calgary, Alberta
    • Children's Hospital Research Institute

Early experiences play an important role in shaping child development, through intergenerational transmission and exposure such as parent mental health and parenting behaviors. Improving our understanding of these dynamic processes can help us find ways to reduce risk and prevent burden by optimizing supports and building resilience. I will provide an overview of my program of research which uses a bioecological model to a) identify individual, family, and neighbourhood level modifiable risk and resilience factors for development, including social cognitive (e.g, theory of mind), sleep and language outcomes; b) identify modifiable risk and resilience factors for perinatal mental health, in general and during the COVID-19 pandemic; and c) uses a patient-oriented approach to inform the development and implementation of screening & intervention programs aimed to improve parental functioning and in turn promote positive child development, such as an App for mothers with depression and a program for pregnant women with a history of trauma.
