The CHU Sainte-Justine Pharmacy Department offers services, care, education and research for mother-infant patients. The Department comprises a staff of about 100 persons, including 34 pharmacists, about as many senior pharmacy technical assistants and support personnel.
The Pharmacy Department offers various services, including electronic dispensing recordkeeping (about 1 million electronic transactions per year), dispensing daily single-dose medication, a centralised service for sterile and non-sterile preparations (about 500,000 preparations per year) and responsibility for medication distribution.
Regarding the pharmaceutical care provided, pharmacists are specialised in a dozen state-of-the-art sectors, i.e. obstetrics-gynaecology, neonatology, paediatric intensive care, haematology/oncology, bone marrow grafting, paediatrics, infectious diseases, immunology, parenteral nutrition, pneumology, hepatology and gastroenterology, and drug-related information during pregnancy and breast-feeding.
In terms of education, the Pharmacy Department is affiliated with the Université de Montréal and actively participates to undergraduate programs (professional doctorate in pharmacy – Pharm. D.) and graduate programs (masters in pharmaceutical practice). The Department participates in the training of pharmacy technical assistants as part of vocational school programs. Moreover, the Department offers an internship and fellowship program to foreign pharmacy students.
In terms of research, the Pharmacy Department offers a pharmaceutical service for research support (SPSR) and a pharmaceutical practice research unit (URPP). The team publishes around fifty publications and participates each year in many communication meetings.
