Ph-like ALL: From Bench to the Bedside

Scientific Conference

Friday 16 October 2015 from 12:00 at 13:00

  • Thai Hoa Tran, MD, FRCP(C), FAAP
Research Fellow, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital

I completed my medical degree at McGill University and pediatric residency at the University of Western Ontario. As a pediatric oncologist, I aspire to become a physician-scientist who focuses on translating genomic discoveries into improved novel therapies for pediatric leukemias. My ten years of medical training, which includes a 2-year pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, has fostered a comprehensive clinical experience in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of pediatric cancers. Furthermore, I joined Dr. Mignon Loh’s laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in July 2013 for a three-year research fellowship, focusing on the clinical applications of phosphoflow cytometry and next-generation sequencing technologies in the context of novel therapeutic drug development. Since joining the Loh Lab, my area of research has been focused on Philadelphia chromosome-like acute lymphoblastic leukemia (also known as Ph-like ALL), a newly identified subtype of high-risk ALL associated with poor outcomes when treated with conventional chemotherapy, that occurs in 15% of children and over 25% of young adults with B-lineage ALL. My projects consist of developing a phosphoflow-based assay to screen for patients with Ph-like ALL and investigate the underlying mechanisms of resistance in Ph-like ALL.
