Histone chaperones prevent transcription from scrambling the epigenetic information

The histone chaperones FACT and Spt6 help preserve chromatin structure during transcription. We recently showed that these histone chaperones are required in order to restrict H2A.Z from invading coding regions (Jeronimo & Robert, Bioessays 2016; Jeronimo et al. Mol Cell 2015). Following up on that work, we now provide evidence that FACT and Spt6 are required for maintaining appropriate patterns of histone modification along genes. Progress towards understanding the mechanisms behind this unexpected function of histone chaperones will be discussed.
