Scientific Conference of Friday Noon - Erwan Pernet

Regulatory mechanisms of host defense to infection

  • Erwan Pernet, PhD
    • Research Associate, Dr. Divangahi's Laboratory in Pulmonary Immunology, McGill University

Protection from infections relies on a network of physical, cellular, and molecular mechanisms called host defense to infectious diseases. These mechanisms maintain a careful balance between host resistance, which promotes pathogen clearance, and disease tolerance that limits pathogen-induced tissue damage. A break in either of these arms of the host defense strategy leads to severe infection and disease, indicating that both host resistance and disease tolerance are essential to generate protective immunity against infections. Here I will discuss new cellular and molecular regulatory mechanisms involved in host resistance and disease tolerance to influenza virus infection and how they can be targeted in the development of novel immunotherapies.
