Research in Respiratory Care in Critically Ill Children: from Physiology to Organization Considerations
Speaker
- Atsushi Kawaguchi, MD, PhD
- Intensivist Pediatrician, Postdoctoral Researcher, CHU Sainte-Justine
My research theme has been focusing mainly on pediatric respiratory critical care and the healthcare system evaluation, particularly from the aspects of healthcare resource allocation to tackle an inequity in child health. I am currently leading an international large epidemiological project of prolonged mechanical ventilated children in ICU (42 countries, 260 centers). This research program ultimately aims to reveal the healthcare burden in a critical care setting and provide better care for those children. This project includes several ancillary and posthoc studies, as well have been recently funded for additional ancillary study in which we will examine this from the physiological and biological aspects. This project will result in several high-impact peer-review papers, which allow us to be a leader in this field of science I believe. I have also been conducting studies regarding applied novel respiratory technologies. I am implementing several state-of-art methods to measure the physiological effects of the ventilator intervention, such as Electric Impedance Tomography (EIT) and 3D-imaging system. The uniqueness is in the collaborations with the team in other disciplines in CHUSJ as well as the institutions such as Carleton University and Polytechnique Montréal.
