Scientific Conference - Victoria Meah

Breaking the barriers to prenatal physical activity

Thursday 10 June 2021 from 12:00 at 13:00

  • Victoria Meah, PhD
    • Postdoctoral Fellow at the Program for Pregnancy and Postpartum Health, Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, University of Alberta

Physical activity during pregnancy is known to have many clinical benefits for healthy individuals. However, individuals with complicated pregnancies are traditionally restricted from being active out of concerns for the safety of mother and baby. In some severe conditions, activity restriction is warranted, but in milder conditions, physical activity may improve pregnancy outcomes and maintain maternal health. This presentation will discuss the barriers to physical activity in complicated pregnancies, and include a proposal for patient-oriented research to systematically investigate the benefits and risks of being active for those individuals.
