Scientific Conference of Friday Noon - Selçuk Güven

The Phonology-Morphology Interface in Oral and Written Language Disorders, and Toward AI-Assisted Diagnosis in Speech-Language Disorders

Speaker

  • Selçuk Güven, PhD, SLP
    • Postdoctoral Fellow, IVADO Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, University of Montreal Computer, Science Department

Research in Problems in the domains of morphology and phonology have been reported in developmental language disorder (DLD) and dyslexia across diverse languages and writing systems. However, our understanding of how these language subdomains interact is limited and largely shaped by evidence from English, a language featuring relatively less complex phonology and morphology.

The first part of my talk will focus on the intersection between morphology and phonology in children with DLD and dyslexia from languages with complex morphophonology. In so doing, I will highlight current challenges in the diagnosis of these disorders.

In the second part, I will cover my latest research using AI to tackle diagnostic challenges in these populations. This modern approach has shown great potential to diagnose complex diseases (i.e., Alzheimer’s and mild cognitive impairment). However, while relatively new for the SLP field, it provides promising results to help people with speech-language disorders.
