Scientific Conference of Friday Noon - Ziv Gan-Or
The genetics of REM-sleep behavior disorder and conversion to neurodegenerative diseases
Speaker
- Ziv Gan-Or, MD, PhD
- Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology & Neurosurgery, Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, McGill University
Individuals with REM-sleep behavior disorder (RBD) are acting out their dreams during REM-sleep, a phase of sleep in which voluntary muscles are normally inhibited. In recent years, it was demonstrated that >80% of RBD patients will develop Parkinson's disease, dementia or other neurodegenerative disorders 10-15 years in average after the onset of RBD. In this talk, Dr. Gan-Or will describe the studies by his group, aimed to understand the genetic background of RBD and how genetics affect the conversion to Parkinson's disease and dementia.
