Sun Life Financial gives $1 million to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation

For type 2 diabetes and heart disease prevention

Major donation will benefit over 200,000 families across Québec

Montréal, Wednesday, May 15, 2013 – Sun Life Financial is pleased today to be making a substantial $1 million donation to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation, with the co-chairs of the Healing More Better campaign, Jacynthe Côté and Pierre Boivin, in attendance. This is Sun Life Financial’s biggest ever contribution to a Quebec institution, and the first major corporate donation for the Healing More Better campaign, which kicked off in December.

Encouraging children to be physically active: a mission
With this financial contribution, Sun Life Financial becomes a major sponsor of the CIRCUIT program, created in 2010 by the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation. Under the program, which is a first in Canada, children at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes or heart disease are provided with a personalized physical fitness regimen along with the tools and resources they need to be more active in their day to day lives.

Having adopted Type 2 diabetes as our national health cause, preventing it in children first makes perfect sense. We are immensely proud of this significant donation and for the opportunity to join the fight against children’s Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, declared Isabelle Hudon. By supporting such a promising social plan, that will span the entire province and ultimately touch over 200,000 families, we are actively taking part in building a healthier future for children all over Quebec, said Brigitte Parent, Senior Vice-President, Individual Insurance and Investments, Sun Life Financial.

Sun Life Financial is being a pioneer by contributing to the early stages of the CIRCUIT program at Sainte-Justine, declared a delighted Jacynthe Côté. Today’s donation not only speaks to how deeply they care about the children of Sainte-Justine, but is also a tangible example of the crucial role our donors play in helping us reach the campaign’s broader goals.

Giving ourselves the means to reverse the trend
Nearly 30% of Canadian children are either overweight or obese. They are part of the first generation in history expected to have a lower life expectancy than their parents, specified Dr. Jean-Luc Bigras, Chief of Cardiology at the CHU Sainte-Justine and co-director of the CIRCUIT program along with Dr. Mélanie Henderson, pediatric endocrinologist. Sun Life Financial’s donation will enable our teams to take control of the situation and continue to lead the way in researching, advancing and developing new personalized approaches in preventing Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, approaches that will ultimately permeate the entire Quebec healthcare network, concluded Dr. Henderson.

Sun Life Financial will thus be contributing to the creation of a multidisciplinary centre of excellence tasked with responding quickly and delivering personalized care to patients from all over Quebec. The donation will also help breathe life into the development of innovative platforms intended to ascertain a patient’s physical condition more accurately, detect disease risk factors earlier, roll out interventions based on healthy eating, and organize complementary activities for the whole family. Finally, the funds will also go toward supporting the creation of a web portal that will serve as an exchange forum for healthcare providers and patients, while providing a wealth of information to healthcare providers from other centres across Quebec and the general public.
