The diagnosis and investigation of neuromuscular diseases in children and adolescents are performed at CHU Sainte-Justine, firstly at the EMG Laboratory and in close consultation with Dr. Yves Robitaille, Neuropathologist, who interprets muscular biopsy results, and in conjunction with members of the Medical Genetics Department in the case genetic analyses.
Once a diagnosis is confirmed, the child is referred to the Neuromuscular Disease Program (NMD) of the Centre de réadaptation Marie Enfant, where a multidisciplinary team provides monitoring, both physical and psycho-social, of individuals affected by this kind of pathology.
In addition to the clinical management of the rehabilitation, the NMD program members focus on training caregivers and family members in this respect as well as on clinical research. For example, Dr. Guy D’Anjou is a member of an international team, which has initiated a research program on the experimental treatment of spinal amyotrophy, while Dr. Bernard Brais oversees a very dynamic team who is carrying on a research program on the genetic aspects of the NMD.
