Ophtalmology for premature babies
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vascular disorder of the retina which occurs in premature babies and can lead to blindness. Our premature patients are tested for ROP based on the criteria of the Canadian Society of Ophthalmology, targeting some patients within the Neonatology Unit 4 to 6 weeks after their birth.
When they are discharged from the hospital, premature babies must continue to be monitored at the Ophthalmology Clinic over the following weeks in order to monitor their retinal development. Once the danger of the disease has passed, children are re-examined a few months later to detect other eye problems related a premature birth (strabismus, severe myopia, nystagmus, and neuro-ophthalmological problems).
