Periodontics

The Periodontal Clinic has been treating patients hospitalised at CHU Ste-Justine since 1992, for cases of periodontitis as well as mucogingival deformities.

Periodontitis: Progressive infection of the teeth-supporting tissue, which can cause the loss of one or more teeth.

Mucogingival conditions and deformities: Alteration of the shape, contour and/or position of the gums (recessed gums, excess surplus, uneven gum contour).

The CHU Sainte Justine Periodontal Clinic works in close consultation with the Orthodontics Clinic team to correct mucogingival deformities of patients with craniofacial and clef palate issues. Mucogingival surgeries, such as gum grafts can serve to cover exposed roots, increase gum thickness and correct gum shape, in order to improve function and aesthetics. In fact, teeth covered by thin gums or undermining can deteriorate their condition during orthodontic movements. Gum grafts increase gum thickness before orthodontic work can be safely performed.

For being admitted to the Ste-Justine Hospital Periodontal Clinic for treatment, the child must be a patient of the Hospital where he/she is being monitored and treated for a specific condition. This clinic is not open to the general public.

In general, gum grafts are performed before orthodontic treatments are begun. A healing period of eight weeks is recommended prior to orthodontic work.
