Membership objectives for the CHU Sainte-Justine, Mother and Child Clinical Ethics Unit.

Developing local expertise and developing a consistent plan in the management of clinical ethics consultations.

Playing an active role in weekly meetings through a personal commitment of a minimum attendance at 75% of weekly meetings as well as being present at the annual retreat.

In order to bring an ethical interdisciplinary vision to this unit, a variety of different training forms and sources are desirable.

Assistance during training programs is offered to members in order to maintain a good academic level.
Pre-requisites for becoming a member of the Clinical Ethics Unit
Have a strong interest in ethical issues within a clinical environment and:

1) Have prior training in the humanities and social sciences (Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree):

2) Where candidates do not have prior training in clinical ethics or human sciences:
Students will hold the status of interim member within the Clinical Ethics Unit until they have successfully completed their training as specified above.

Situations encountered at the Clinical Ethics Unit

Conflicts (either with the family, loved ones or within the team itself);

Dilemmas (two valid options);

Uncertainty or doubt as how to act;

Discomfort facing a situation, mental suffering or anguish, conflict of values or matters of conscience;

Difficulty reaching a decision or struggling to position oneself in view of a certain situation;

Various good decisions are offered but the means of reaching one single decision remains unclear.
