Innovating to improve the health of mothers and children

What is health innovation?

At CHU Sainte-Justine, innovation refers to all new behaviours, routines, technologies and ways of doing things associated with our missions, aiming to improve the population’s health through the performance, relevance or experience of our population. This is all done through planned, coordinated actions.

Over the past year, organizational transformation continued based on four care trajectories, each trajectory having a health care component (acute illnesses, chronic and complex illnesses, mother and child, and physical deficiency), several tiers of resources and services, as well as a coordination mechanism.

The innovation platform was introduced in June 2015, and with it, it is now possible to continually introduce and facilitate technological innovation in care and services.

The components and innovation platform therefore contribute to the achievement of CHU Sainte-Justine’s mission to improve the health of mothers and children by adequately defining their needs and integrating innovation and knowledge (learning and research) into care.

What is a health care component?

Health care components support the teams with innovation and development project proposals in relation with care and services (set of behaviours, routines, and ways of doing things) and the integration of academic missions. They help the teams that are proposing innovations at each step of the innovation cycle.

The health care components are currently supporting 14 projects from the care teams. Moreover, the component works with the pier teams on integrating the best practice knowledge in eight projects, and revising the relevance of our care and services practices in three projects.

What is an innovation platform?

The innovation platform receives the technological innovation projects (drugs, equipment, and technological platform) and helps the teams eliminate obstacles to the implementation of technologies in care and services and other CHUSJ missions.

It is also the main respondent for industry requests to develop a technological product associated with the health of the mother or child. The platform is currently involved in 12 projects.

The innovation cycle is the method used by CHUSJ to manage innovation and knowledge within the components and innovation platform.
