How to help grieving parents

Perinatal bereavement

The loss of a baby is devastating for the parents, but also for many of the people in their lives.

This type of bereavement can be so complex and incomprehensible that many people are at a loss for how to help and what to do for bereaved parents.

  • Should we talk about the baby?
  • What can we say that won’t overwhelm them?
  • Are there topics to avoid?
  • Should we contact the grieving parents?
  • How can we tangibly help?
  • Is it normal that they are so sad?
  • How long will it take for them to get better?

This section is for everyone – from loved ones to acquaintances – who are affected by this death. It aims to help them better understand the issues of perinatal mourning.

“Better understanding leads to better intervention” – Johanne Martel (2018)
