Gaucher Disease

Gaucher Disease Program

Joint program: CHU Sainte-Justine, Montreal Jewish General Hospital

Our Program

This website is intended for people affected with Gaucher disease and for health care professionals assisting patients with this disease. The objective of this site is to provide a better understanding of Gaucher disease and its associated complications.

A multidisciplinary team has been established to ensure the provision of quality care to this particular group of individuals. Its goal is to provide Quebecers who have Gaucher disease with the needed diagnostic, treatment and monitoring services according to international standards of excellence.

Our team

The team is composed of a hematologist (pediatric and adult), a geneticist, a pharmacist, and a clinical nurse. Other professionals may be called on by the team, such as endocrinologists, pneumologists, neurologists, radiologists, and psychologists.

The director of the Gaucher Disease Program is Dr. Georges-Étienne Rivard and the co-director is Dr. Sarit Assouline, who assists adult patients.

Tests, treatment plans, and treatment changes are determined by the multidisciplinary team who meets once a year or, if required, additional times to assess a specific situation. With supervision from the multidisciplinary team, patients can receive treatment at the Montreal Jewish General Hospital, the Sainte-Justine Hospital, their regional hospital or at home. Follow-up medical appointments must take place every three months at the hospital where the treatment is administered to the patient. However, adult patients aged 18 years or older must go to the Montreal Jewish General Hospital for a complete annual medical checkup by the physicians responsible for the program, and pediatric patients younger than 18 years must go to the Sainte-Justine Hospital for the same purpose.

The Sainte-Justine Hospital’s pharmacy is responsible for overseeing the budget and supply of products for the different hospitals.
