Dental care for disabled children

Marie Enfant Special Care Clinic

Since 1967, the Centre de Réadaptation Marie Enfant has provided dental services to young people with one or several disabilities.

We use an approach and techniques that were specifically designed to meet the needs of these patients.

Expertise regarding young people with a disability

Our team of professionals offers services adapted to the needs of these patients and provides basic and specialized dental care in the best possible comfort. An operating room is available and surgery can be performed under general anaesthesia or intravenous sedation. Through such outpatient surgery procedures, we can provide reliable, safe and comfortable treatments to patients, while reducing to a minimum any side effects.

With the support of professional hygienists, dental assistants, and respiratory therapists, our dentists and anaesthesiologists work to maintain and improve patients’ autonomy regarding their oral health care.

Specific advice

The staff can teach patients techniques adapted to their age, disability and environment in order to facilitate daily tooth brushing.

Prevention first

Giving priority to dental hygiene is very important for us to prevent periodontal disease (gum disease), cavities and halitosis (bad breath) and incite caregivers to adopt good dental hygiene practices.

To be 18 years of age or less and to meet one of the following criteria:

  • Motor impairment
  • Intellectual disability – Down syndrome
  • Pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) and autism
  • To be admitted in a targeted program at the Centre de réadaptation Marie Enfant

The dental care team at the Centre de réadaptation Marie Enfant is working in close consultation with the Dentistry Department of the CHU Sainte-Justine (university medical centre) as well as numerous private practices.
