Alternate consent models in Canadian critical care research

  • Saoirse Cameron, MA, Hons BSc
    • Clinical Research Coordinator, London Health Sciences Centre, London, Ontario, Canada

Obtaining consent in critical care research poses unique challenges including overcoming substitute decision maker stress and time limited enrolment. Alternate consent models have been utilized primarily in emergency research but may also be applicable in critical care research. We will discuss alternate consent models, regulatory requirements for the use of alternate consent models, the unique considerations in critical care research and recent experience implementing alternate consent models for use in paediatric research.
