Since its creation, Sainte-Justine University Health Center (CHUSJ) promotes a vision and values of continuous innovation. In order to manage in a more effective and coherent way the innovations coming from any sources in the CHUSJ, a platform of innovation integration was created.
The Innovation Platform aims to be a facilitator and a stimulator of innovation. It serves as assistance for the actors proposing innovations, within CHUSJ or from the industry.
At the CHUSJ, we define innovation as any new set of behaviours, routines, technologies or practices that have to do with our missions aiming the improvement of the population’s health, of performance, of relevance or of the client’s overall experience. All of which is put into play by well thought out and coordinated actions. Embedded within innovations, it is possible to identify various types of innovation. To begin, technological innovations consist of a tool or object which is a result of a deliberate or accidental invention (Harrisson, 2002) and will be the object of valorization and commercialization in the industry.
Then, there is social innovation which concerns an approach, practice or intervention created to improve a situation or find the solution to a health problem concerning institutions, organizations or communities (CST, 2000). This second type of innovation is not as easily commercialisable, but it can be valorized through other means and by the spread if knowledge. At the beginning of the process, social innovation will not be documented by the platform because it falls more under the umbrella of the Executive direction of academic care of the CHUSJ.
The innovation process concerns here all health technology
According to the International Network of Health Technologies Assessment (INAHTA), a health technology is defined as an intervention that may be used to promote health, to prevent, diagnose or treat acute or chronic disease, or for rehabilitation. Health technologies include pharmaceuticals, devices, procedures and organizational systems used in health care.
